Review - Homemade Energy Gel (UPDATE)

2/18/2010 09:02:00 PM

This post is a follow up to my first homemade energy gel review. Earlier today, I listened to the podcast "A Run Supreme" by fellow ultra runner Marc A. Krejci. He happened to discuss homemade energy gels and a recipe he came up with.

Homemade Energy Gel

- 5 tablespoons of brown rice syrup
- 3 tablespoons of agave or honey
- 2 tablespoons of blackstrap molasses
- 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt
Tip: Mix in water as needed for consistency. Use vanilla extract or lemon lime as needed for flavoring.

After listening to this podcast and remembering my last "goo" review, I figured I could combine the recipes to come up with something that might be even more nutritious. I used the recipe above and added the following ingredients:

- 3 teaspoons of soy protein isolate
- 1 teaspoon of chia seeds soaked in 9 teaspoons of water before added to recipe

These ingredients should add a little more punch to the energy gel. I am still trying to figure out if the flavor will be tolerable to me during my next long run. I chose to add vanilla extract instead of lemon lime flavoring. I am sure cool-aid could be added for flavoring as well. First taste tests confirm that the flavor is tolerable, although my fiancé preferred the flavor of my previous homemade energy gel attempt. But she assured me that she could stomach this gel if her live depended on it and if no other food was available. I am sure a little more vanilla extract will make it as tolerable as necessary. More details to follow.
