Wow, today felt pretty good. That doesn't mean I wasn't tired or drenched in sweat I just felt better overall. I got up at 3:45AM and while I was still working on my first cup of coffee, Anya took off to get her run in. I decided I would try to play catch up as soon as I was ready to go. And so I did.
It took nearly a quarter of a mile to catch up to her and I was glad to settle into her pace for a while. I knew I'd have to peel off and keep on going for another half loop once she'd make the turn back to our house, so I just enjoyed the time with her without having to think about training. Once we completed our half loop together, I continued on to complete my 5 mile run for the day. Since today's workout called for an easy 5 miler, my target pace wasn't quite as aggressive as it has been. To no avail, by the way, as I have barely been able to get even close to my target pace in this weather.
I picked up the pace without paying attention to my Garmin. It was still dark outside and no one else milling around aside from what I assume is the early morning shift at our local university. I continued to run steady without feeling like I couldn't maintain my pace, which is unusual looking at my last few training runs. Lately, it seems any pace felt like hard labor, no matter how slow, so this was kind of nice. When I returned to our house, I had dropped my overall pace for the 5.5 mile run comfortably to below 9 minutes per mile. I can live with that. I really think that I will be able to run faster with less effort as soon as the oppressive heat and humidity subsides. In the meantime, I will continue to train without worrying too much about my pace.
