What a great way to start the new year. My son asked me to take him on a trail run with his Vibram Five Fingers KSO shoes I got him for Christmas. It also gave me an excuse to put my VFFs back on. I hadn't worn them in a long time, even though I kept thinking I wanted to integrate these things into my regular training routine somehow to strengthen my feet.

Mace (who is now officially a teenager since his birthday on Christmas Day) and I took my old Jeep and headed to the Indian Creek Greenway. I knew that paved trail was nice and flat and it had a nice grass/dirt trail running in parallel to the actual trail, which would allow us a softer landing.

Mace realized very quickly that VFFs require a different foot strike. He pointed out that his achilles tendon and calf muscles seemed to be having to work much harder than usual. Yup, that's correct, I said. I had been struggling blisters from my severe help striking ever since I started running ultras beyond 31 miles and
those VFFs purpose in my training was actually to teach me to strike more with my mid foot. Hopefully, I will stick with using these shoes more frequently during some short training runs.

This run was a great way to start the new year with my son, allowing me to loosen up my legs after yesterday's race and to use my VFFs again for the first time in a long time.
