I woke up at 7AM this morning and met up with Mike Mulligan to go for a quick run. We met up in the lobby of the Hyatt Regency hotel in Santa Clara, California where we are staying for a conference at 7:30AM. I had mapped out a nice trail run starting out just behind our hotel on the San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail and leading onto the San Francisco Bay Trail before looping back around.

The weather was slightly overcast with temperatures in the high 60s or low 70s. This was my first run since the Dick Collins Firetrails 50 Miler on Saturday and my muscles were extremely sore. I had also started to come down with a head cold on Sunday, so I really wasn't feeling up to it initially. But since I was dealing with head cold issues and not any chest congestion (yet!), I figured it wouldn't hurt to try to get my legs loosened up to speed up my recovery.

We kept our pace at a slow 10 minutes per mile and while the initial trail section along the San Tomas Aquino Creek was asphalt, the San Francisco Bay Trail was mostly dirt and gravel trail. It was a very nice run and quite unexpected as we were kind of in the middle of Silicon Valley with lots of office space and little perceived green space. Imagine my surprise, when I found a vast network of trails for running, walking and biking. It was fantastic and actually helped me feel better. We ended running a total of 9 miles, not too shabby for what was supposed to be an easy recovery run. Well, I'm happy anyway and I will be resting some more over the course of this week.

As a final comment, I need to mention something that I had never ever experienced before. As Mike and I returned from our 90 minute run, drinched in sweat, the doorman approached both of us with a towel and a bottle of water, asking us about our run and even mentioning the fact that he saw us leaving very early in the AM. I have never experienced such a level of attention to me after a run at any hotel...ever. I commend the Hyatt Regency for encouraging that level of service to its guests. It was absolutely first class!
