This was my last official training/taper run before I depart for Nicaragua's Fuego y Agua 100K tomorrow. Richard and I met up at my house for an slow and easy 5 miler. I had scrapped plans to do another mountain run and opted for an easy one instead. Weather was perfect with temps in the low 50s, but it won't prepare me for the heat and humidity that is Nicaragua at this time of year. Either way, I'm ready to go. This evening will be spent back, checking and double checking my gear, forgetting stuff anyway, and going to bed early;-)

Isla de Ometepe, here I come!

My second to last training run today during my taper period before the Fuego y Agua 100K in Nicaragua this weekend. The weather has been miserable, rainy and cold with temps in the high 30s. Richard and I met up and my house at 6AM for a short and slow 5 miles around the UAH campus. I plan one more challenging run up Monte Sano mountain at an easy pace tomorrow and then rest until Saturday.

Instead of the usual Ranger Station out & back trail run, Richard and I added a little loop at the top of the run by running the Sinks Trail section as part of our run. That gave us close to 11 miles with plenty of climbing as usual.

As I looked at the calendar today, I realized that I would be departing for Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua in exactly two weeks. While I am excited to no end that my fiancee Anya will be accompanying me on this ultra running adventure, I am also getting very nervous about the race itself. Fuego Y Agua is a 100K ultra marathon taking runners across two volcanoes in the process. While I've trained better over the last few months than I ever have, this race is intimidating. I've started working on a separate post that just deals with the prep and logistics of that race, but my actual training must continue. After all, Fuego Y Agua is just two weeks before the Double Top 100 Mile race, which I somehow ended up registering for as well;-)
