Once thing's for sure, my training regimen over the last 4-6 weeks can barely be called ultra training. I am hoping having dialed back the training over the last few weeks will have helped me get rid of some of those nagging injuries. I did receive a second medical opinion confirming that I indeed do not have a sports hernia, so that means starting an anti-inflammatory regimen once a day to try to get the inflammation in check. At least that's what the doc suggested. Having raced at least one ultra every month for the last 16 months, taking a little break is probably not a bad idea. I have the desert stage race coming up in two weeks and I'd rather be too rested than too tired. 6 days, 150 miles of pure "fun in the sun".

I really wasn't prepared to enter this race, but my employer sponsored employees and their family members, so I couldn't resist entering myself for both the 10K and the 5K and my son for the 5K. I did the same thing last year and I wanted to keep the streak alive. After all, it's a local race. I really wanted to run the 5K together with him again and he is usually ready to run anything up to a 5K just because of his soccer training.

This run happened as a mere coincidence. We had made plans to meet up with friends of ours just outside of Atlanta to hang out and to go furniture shopping. They had driven up from Huntsville on Thursday to take care of some errands and we followed them on Saturday morning.

Majority rules, as it should. As a result, I was overruled and the Cotton Row course was selected for an early Monday morning run. As I was driving over to Richard's house, I received texts from Richard telling me that James was now sick and out and Mike was out as well. That left Rich, Jay and myself. Half a mile into the run, Jay's recent knee injury flared up and he had to cut his run short.

After arriving home from Florida just before midnight last night, getting up at 4:30AM this morning to meet the guys for a great hill workout up the Monte Sano mountain trails wasn't easy at all. In fact, I sent Rich a tezt right after my alarm went off just to make sure no one had changed their minds. Nope, everyone was still ready to go, so I got up, fixed myself the obligatory cup of coffee, got dressed and took off for Richard's house, were I met him and James at 5:15AM.

Being at the beach, even if it is for work, and not going for a run is a sin. That's why I made sure to go for a run while at the beautiful South Seas Island Resort in Captiva, Florida. As the name suggests, this resort is on an island off the coast right outside Ft. Myers on the Florida panhandle. I managed to get up at 6AM and head out, not really having done the research to know where I'm going. I knew to head towards the "North Pointe" of the island and back, but I didn't know how much distance that would give me. I headed down a quite road, the only road really, as there was either the coast line on one side of the road and expensive beach mansions with direct beach access on the other side of the road. This was most definitely the  most narrow populated island or section of island I had ever been on.

Friday the 13th, but no one broke a leg. It was time for another run this morning. I picked up Richard at 5AM this morning and we met up with James at the hiker's parking lot at Monte Sano State Park. Temps were already in the low 70s. We decided to run the Dizzy Fifties Loop to get somewhere around 8-9 miles. The first thing I noticed was the annoying buzzing sound that seemed to come and go as we ran the trails. Assomeone mentioned on the ultralist, it is the season for red-eyed Cicadas, the ones that onlycomeout every 13 years. I'm not a big fan of any type of bug, so I'm not too disappointed that they only hatch every thirteen years. Some trail sections looked like someone had taken a gigantic drill and turned the trail into Swiss cheese. The weather was perfect this morning. We also got to see four deer that didn't notice us until we were about 20-30 yards from them. Add the occasional squirrel and we had a regular zoo ou there. We even managed to pick up the pace for a mile here and there during the run.

While we were both kind of tired this AM, we did meet up at my house at 6AM for a quick and easy 4.5 miler around the UAH campus. The temps were already in the low 70s again and Richard was really not feeling it today. At first he figured it was his new restricted calories diet and then he suspected dehydration, which was probably the culprit. I was feeling ok, other than the usual twitch in my lower abdomen and the groin strain I've been feeling for a couple of weeks. I figured a 2 week layoff would possibly resolve these issues, but that has not been the case. I am going to schedule an appointment with my family doc to see what the deal is. It's time to find out if I'm just imagining things or if I have a serious injury to deal with.

After an alomst 2 week break due to old lingering injuries and work, I decided it was time to get out there again. This was my longest break from running by far over the last 2 years. I drove over to Richard's house at about 5:45 AM this morning and joined up with Richard, Mike, James and Jay for a nice and easy run. With the Cotton Row Run 10k & 5k just around the corner, we had decided to run the course to familiarize ourselves with it again. Obviously, it's all about the hill. We found the least common denominator for our pace and settled in for that pace throughout the run.
